Mediterranean Parrotfish
Sparisoma cretense
42.6516, 18.0589
Field Notes
Description:
The Mediterranean parrotfish, Sparisoma cretense, is notable for its colorful appearance and important ecological role. These parrotfish typically measure around 30-50 cm in length - all those we have seen did not exceed 40cm. Interestingly, in this species, females are more brightly colored than males. Females exhibit a striking red hue with a yellow-edged greyish saddle on their backs and a yellow spot at the base of their tails. In contrast, males have a more subdued greyish appearance with paler underparts and blackish bars on the throat and operculum. Parrotfish possess a robust body and a distinctive beak-like structure formed by fused teeth, which they use to scrape algae and other organisms off rocks and coral, contributing significantly to the health of their marine habitat.
Habitat:
This parrotfish is primarily found in the Mediterranean sea, and inhabits rocky coastal areas, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. They are typically found at depths ranging from the surface to about 50 meters, we observed them at some 12-15m of depths.
Notes:
1.) A huge thank you to Laura Wheadon, my diving instructor, who also captured videos of our dives, resulting in these images.
2.) These fish are herbivorous, primarily feeding on algae, which they scrape off rocks using their beak-like teeth. This behavior plays a crucial role in controlling algal growth on reefs, thus maintaining the health of the coral ecosystem.
3.) They are not considered in danger, but overfishing and habitat degradation are significant threats to their populations. They are often caught as bycatch in fisheries.
