Field Notes

Description:

The flowers on these begonias were about 3/4" across, with yellow stamens/pistils, with both on every plant. Each flower seems to have two petals, but in this genus sepals and petals look the same, so they are called tepals. The round slightly somewhat hairy leaves were 2-4" across.

Habitat:

I'm assuming these were wild because they were growing out of a bank in a remote section of Costa Rica, but they may be an escaped cultivar. The shady, north-facing bank was on a trail leading down to the Pacific Ocean, on the west side of the Osa Peninsula. The bank was about six feet high, moist and fairly steep, and a solid mass of the plants (and ferns, too) covered quite a bit of it.
