Description:
Diogmites platypterus is a robber fly that is dark brown to black with dark smokey wings and have bright yellow halteres (the projections in front of the wings). It has a somewhat narrow waist as these mimic dark wasp, especially in flight.
Habitat:
Spotted at Ott Park in central Arkansas along the Arkansas River. Open trail thru bottom-land. Lots of low lying vegetation where the trail opens up.
Notes:
The Diogmites are a Genus of robber fly that hangs upside down after capturing their prey, hence the common name - Hanging Thief.
