Field Notes

Description:

This killdeer performed a broken-wing display, feigning injury presumably to deter me from its nest. This is a classic defensive response to predators. Notice that it resumes normal behavior once I moved away.

Habitat:

Seen in a parking lot. Open areas with short vegetation make good nesting sites for killdeer.

Nice story, Tukup. :) Thank you for sharing. This was my first time seeing a killdeer.
Beautiful shot Mauna. When I was a kid I used to chase all the killdeer with broken wings. Even though my dad told me they were "faking it" I could get sooooo close, I was sure I would get one :-) Thanks for sharing.
