Woolly Bear Caterpillar

Woolly bear caterpillars are usually around 2 inches length. Woolly bear caterpillars’ bodies are densely coated with black hairs, with a stripe across the width, coated with orange or red hairs. Woolly bear caterpillars eat a variety of grass and weeds. Usually, a woolly bear caterpillar hibernates around the northern parts of the Isabella tiger moths’ range in May. After they hibernate, they usually go unnoticed until fall again. The more a woolly bear caterpillar eats, the bigger the caterpillar is. When it is big, the woolly bear caterpillar will start to cocoon. After they cocoon, they turn into an Isabella tiger moth! The woolly bear caterpillar is also known as Pyrrharctia Isabella, or as an Isabella tiger moth caterpillar.
