Gall
16.78, -92.64
Field Notes
Description:
A relatively large gall, at about 1 cm diameter, covered in thick red-brown hair. It appears to be on a Live Oak leaf. How the plant creates the hair in response to the larva is remarkable. It is obviously of benefit to the larva in keeping out predators. Do plant and larval genes interact to create each particular gall which resembles neither of them?
Habitat:
Arcotete Park, about 10 km north of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
