Field Notes

Description:

Approximately 3 - 4.5 feet for adults with earth tone colors as well as black. Cross bans and patches make young snakes of this species resemble young Cottonmouths. As this species ages it darkens to the point the patterning is hard to see and this makes it look even more like an adullt Cottonmouth.

Habitat:

Found in almost any slower body of freshwater.

Notes:

This species has a reputation for being a bit nervous but this individual was very calm and provided a good opportunity to take numerous pictures before it slithered away and dropped into the lake.

In older references the scientific name for this species may appear as M
Natrix sipedon
