Orange Milk Cap
Lactarius subflammeus
57.8109, -152.362
Field Notes
Description:
Bright orange mushroom with pale orange gills and stipe. The gills exuded a lot of white latex when damaged. Stipe also a bit spongy, as with most Lactarius. Kind of chemical tasting/acrid to bitter latex. Tasteless at first then kicks in after a few seconds
Habitat:
in a grassy area near a parking lot and some Sitka spruce trees.
Notes:
Note: taste and spit test can be an important identification tool for identifying mushrooms. Mushrooms should never be swallowed when doing this test, only tasted and then spit out. Wild mushrooms almost always need to be cooked before consumed even when edible.
