Field Notes

Description:

I saw this peculiar fruit along a trail at Brownsberg Naturepark, Suriname. I'm assuming it is a fruit, and that it was attached to the vine encircling the tree and not the tree itself. The fruit itself was about the size of a lemon, and had fuzzy spikes around it. I have no idea what kind of fruit this is, if it is edible, or what kind of animals in the forest would eat it. I study primates, so any help would be appreciated.

Habitat:

tropical rainforest, Guiana Shield, Suriname
