Field Notes

Description:

Found at higher elevation forests of peninsular India and Sri Lanka.
Has a black tipped, upward curved tail and Reddish-brown colour body

Habitat:

Forest living animal.
Found at islands in Mahaweli River, in Gatambe region, in Kandy

Notes:

There are two sub-species of this mongoose, H. smithii smithii in India, and H. smithii zeylanicus (Thomas, 1852) in Sri Lanka.
