Field Notes
Description:
This is the female pileated woodpecker. Her red cap is not as extensive as the male's cap. She does not have a red mustache. A beautiful bird with a black back with white underwing and wing patches.
Habitat:
This female pileated woodpecker was very busy going from ground to tree near our campsite at Shepard State Park in Gautier, Mississippi. Her loud call is unmistakeable and heard her before seeing her.
