Field Notes

Description:

The bright pink throat gorget of this male Anna's sparkles in the sunlight but looks blackish purple in the shade of the trumpet vine blossom it is feeding on. Love the bluish green plumage on the back.

Habitat:

Seen foraging for nectar on a trumpet vine in the San Diego zoo plantings. These beautiful hummingbirds sometimes do a reverse migration and come north to BC for the winter from their historical breeding grounds in California and Oregon. In the last ten years, there has been breeding evidence along the southern coast of BC and they are regular visitors now to my garden in the breeding season, April - July.
