Field Notes

Description:

Upon arriving at our lunch stop (outside) the guide said "make sure you sit under the trees or else the kites will swoop down and steal your lunch but they can't balance in enclosed spaces under trees"...well either this one was very hungry or it just decided to prove him wrong as it DID swoop down and steal my piece of chicken right from my fingertips, covering my face with its soft wings and landing in my picnic box on my knee before regaining its balance and flying off leaving me with the small piece i had torn off in my other hand much to the amusement of everyone else! I'm not sure who was more shocked...the kite that it successfully managed to steal a meal or me that I had just had a black kite sit on my knee!! it then decided to sit right above almost to gloat in its victory.

Habitat:

Seen at a picnic site on the way from Arusha to the Serengeti, Tanzania.
