Field Notes

Description:

Marsh bird with brown patterned feathers on top and rusty chest. Dark barring on belly. Bill is orange with brown on top. Bill is also slightly curved down. Immature bird is duller with a dark bill and short wings and tail.

Habitat:

The live mostly in salt marshes

Notes:

The Northern Harrier which prey on these birds will wait til high tide when the rails will have a harder time to hide. I noticed here they will show at low tide to feed when the Harriers are not around.
