Field Notes

Description:

Black, wiry stems, classic sword fern shape with alternate pinnae that overlapped slightly at the stem. The fronds I photographed all appeared to be fertile fronds, though the sori didn't look fully developed yet. Sterile fronds are shorter and evergreen with blunt pinnae. I also noticed that the pinnae appear to start to whirl around the stem near the top (see photo 5). This was the only fern around in this densely vegetated area.

Habitat:

Overgrown area dominated by Blackberry (Rubus) brambles, Gelsemium sempervirens, and Geranium at Bearhead Hammock Recreational Area
