Mantled Howler Monkey
Alouatta palliata
8.38649, -83.3073
Field Notes
Description:
The mantled howler monkey is (along with other species of howler) the loudest mammal in the world. This one was in a tree over the road when we stopped to photograph, in a group of five, and we were warned to not stand beneath them as they will pee on you just for fun. Their fun. These are much redder than the howlers where I live in Belize. In the first two photos respectively, the monkey is howling and hoot/huffing. After awhile it left, using its prehensile tail like a fifth hand (the feet are the 3rd and 4th hands ;o}
Habitat:
This monkey was in a beach almond tree in second growth forest midway between Puerto Jimenez and the west coast of the Osa.
