Dagger Fly
16.78, -92.64
Field Notes
Description:
A Dagger Fly with a long proboscis, about 1 cm long. These flies are normally predators on other small arthropods, but are also known to feed on nectar. In the first 3 pictures, the fly is clearly puncturing the base of a tubular flower (like Hummingbirds do) to reach the nectar that it otherwise would not be able to get to, even with that long proboscis. Family Empididae.
Habitat:
Forest, about 5 km up Mt. Huitepec, west of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
