Field Notes

Description:

native to mexico, the Dahlia has been in cultivation outside the Americas since the Spanish Conquest. The Aztecs used the tubers as food. The Conquistadors were under orders not to destroy another civilization when they arrived in Inca country(they obviously didn't succeed). It is not hard to imagine these being brought as trades goods to the Inca

Notes:

Presumably this is a domestic dahlia despite growing in the ancient city of Ollantaytambo.
