Field Notes

Description:

A veritable plague of little green galls sprouting white hair was all over this particular plant. Literally hundreds of galls in a very small area. I find it fascinating how the plant is creating the white hairs on the gall tissue. Galls can be caused by several groups of arthropods, including larvae of moths, flies, wasps and beetles.

Habitat:

Forest floor, about 5 km up Mt. Huitepec, west of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
