Field Notes

Description:

Smaller Beetle with solid black head, thorax and abdomen. Solid red elytra (wing covers). Played dead when threatened. The only member of it's species found in the eastern US (according to Bugguide).

Habitat:

Woodlands.

Notes:

Found crossing the trail in a wooded area in Connetquot State Park. It crawled onto my hand on it's own and when I gently tilted my hand to let it of it dropped to the leaves and played dead. This is a normal behavior for this beetle. I promise I did not injure, maim, damage or harm this insect in any way! :-)

Thank you Keith, that's the one! I completely forgot to check the Blister Beetles when I was searching.
