Field Notes

Description:

The Weka is a flightless bird found in New Zealand, not unlike a chicken in size and behavior. There are several sub-species of Weka, the ones pictured here being Western Wekas.

Notes:

This pair appeared to be rooting for lunch in the wet and grassy underbrush beside a scenic trail, and often would venture onto the trail when people were not in the immediate vicinity.
