Field Notes

Description:

This tree has flowers and fruit. There was no fruit that I could see during this spotting, but the fruit is yellow and waxy. The flowers are small and pink, and one stalk of flowers is 6 cm long. The leaf shape is oblong/ovate, and the leaves are 10 cm long, and 4.5 cm wide. The margins are entire, and it has a drip tip. The leaf venation is netted pinnate, with an opposite/subopposite arrangement. It is smooth and leathery, with a rough and furrowed bark. The root system was buttress roots.

Habitat:

This tree was found in a secondary rainforest in Singapore, very close to the path near the entrance.

Notes:

This tree is native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. When the fruit is cut, it resembles a star shape (hence the name starfruit). Many people describe the taste as either sour/tart or sweet. It has small pink flowers as well.
