Field Notes

Description:

Masters of disguise, these are often nestled into the center of a flower waiting to "ambush" their prey.
Large, pointed, mantis-like forelegs.
Colors vary. Large squarish head, flat back with edges convex in shape.

Habitat:

Spotted in the tops of the bronze fennel blooms in my flower bed next to my house.

Notes:

Three species are noted in Ohio most commonly: Phymata americana, P. fasciata, and P. pennsylvanica
