Field Notes

Description:

This Leaf Beetle (Family Chrysomelidae) was very similar to a Fungus Beetle (Endomychidae) that was also coming at the same time to an ultraviolet light.
(http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/2046256002/fullscreen). Both beetles are similar in size, color and spot pattern and both are also similar to a Ladybug. This Leaf Beetle however has a fine layer of hair all over the pronotum and elytra.
The two beetles may belong to a mimicry system between themselves or both may be imitating a Ladybug.

Habitat:

Ultraviolet light, Finca Argovia, Ruta de Cafe, Soconusco area of southern Chiapas, Mexico. About 1 hour from Tapachula.
