Field Notes

Description:

Butterfly or moth caterpillar perhaps. Found on butterfly farm but not the caterpillar of any of the butterflies on display.

Trying to determine the identity of this caterpillar, the best I have done so far is to narrow it to some sort of swallowtail butterfly in the family Papilionidae, I think.

Turns out it's a Common Lime Butterfly caterpillar in the first or second instar. This one has five instars it goes through.

Habitat:

Garden

They look like little slugs with an extra pairs of "horns" or like bird-dropping, to minimize predatory attacks. Interesting spotting Joey99 !
Lenny, thanks for your ID. Joe
