Field Notes

Description:

A tall, slender crane with grey and brown plumage throughout most of its body. The head is scarlet red on top, fading to whitish/grey toward the neck. Feet and beak are black.

Habitat:

Backwaters of the Mississippi River.

Notes:

While photographing this individual, who was with another, we did get to hear the vocalizations calling to another pair across the levee. Very difficult to describe, so they can be heard at https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sandhill_Crane/sounds.

Your photos are amazing! The sandhill cranes really blend in with the background, yet you managed to make them really stand out in your photos. Well done Bill!
