Field Notes

Description:

A colorful Tachinid fly with an orange abdomen and dark wings with a white border. This fly was about 8 mm in length. It was getting water from the wet sand along the river. These are feather-legged flies, but it was gone before I could get a good picture of the hind legs. Family Tachinidae (possibly Trichopoda pennipes). The larvae are parasitoids of Hemiptera, especially the Pentatomidae and Coreidae.

Habitat:

Sandy area along the river, Chorreadero Waterfall Park, Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico.
