Field Notes

Description:

Chrysomelidae; Galerucinae; Luperini; Aulacophora lewisii Baly, 1886. There are many beetles that look similar to A. lewisii, but the characteristic of its appearance which usually helps me to identify it is the Elytra which do not quite cover the posterior of the abdomen. That eliminates many others and helps to put me on the right track (at least, I think it is right) leading to Aulacophora lewisii.

Habitat:

I spotted these Cucurbit Leaf Beetles, this morning, in the rice mill backyard. They were all crawling around on yellow flowers growing wild in amongst other weeds. These flowers were instantly recogniseable as being the blossom of Sponge Gourd (Luffa acutangula) locally called Patola. We grow this plant from time to time in our vegetable plots. I can only assume that the seeds were dispersed by birds and now the plants are turning up all over the place. Plant identification - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Patola.html

Notes:

You might have noticed that there is a small bee in the first picture. I think it is Apis cerana, the Asian Honey Bee.
