Altica pagana is already quite close, but... that's an Australian species! It is in fact a member of the same genus, but much more likely one of the 7 species found in Britain (Altica brevicollis, carinthiaca, helianthemi, longicollis, lythri, oleracea, palustris). A. oleracea and A. lythri are the most common ones, but the only way to distinguish them is to collect some specimens and dissect them under a microscope.
After a bit of google searching I think I may have found a match - Altica pagana?
Hi Sam. I'd say they were ~5mm in length. And yes, there were lots of them today! What habitat did you spot yours in?
What sort of size where they? I found a few earlier today, seems to be loads of them around! No idea what they are though..
