Field Notes

Description:

Unusual moth about 1.5 cm long with bright yellow underwings with a black margin. The underside is yellow and dark grey. The abdomen is yellow with dark bands. Family Notodontidae, Dioptinae.

Habitat:

Semi-urban area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This little moth was on the sidewalk and didn't move even when 2 large dogs ran over the top of it. I brought it home to release it in the garden and put it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to photograph the underwings and the underside. I have never seen this species before.
It is similar to this species from Brazil, identified by bayucca: http://www.flickr.com/photos/almircandido/5984235963/

Thank you bayucca, I was hoping you would see this one and check out my efforts to find it. :)
Notodontidae, Dioptinae, Phaeochlaena gyon. http://www.boldsystems.org/index.php/Taxbrowser_Taxonpage?taxid=592283 It is actually a Notodontidae, Dioptinae, so your correct common name would be Dioptine Moth ;-)... But anyway good job not to call it an Arctiinae.
