Field Notes

Description:

When this male northern red cardinal wasn't looking to see what I was doing, it was just singing and singing. Love to see them in the wild, since they are our familiar backyard bird. He has a large red bill and crest and an all red bird but has a black mask that extends from the face down to the chin and throat. Interesting--the male feeds young of the first brood by himself while the female builds a second nest.

Habitat:

This male northern cardinal was spotted in a long needle pine tree at Shepard State Park in Gautier, Mississippi.
