Description:
A small halfbeak species. Female (pictured) about 6cm long and males about half that at 3cm long. Light browns on dorsal surface silvery white on ventral a rich brown along flanks and a fine black pinstripe along sides. Diagnostic is the dorsal fin that starts behind the anal fin in this species (image 3). The lower mandible is flanged on the sides, just visible in images 1 and 2.
Habitat:
Found through SE Asia it is usually found on the surface of small streams. This one was in a small fresh water stream feeding into the MacRitchie Reservoir in the Central Catchment Reserve, Singapore.
Notes:
A very adaptable little fish, it can survive in many water types from acidic forest streams to brackish mangrove swamps. It is also oviviparous.
