Field Notes
Description:
Tragopogon porrifolius is a common purple wildflower, native to Mediterranean regions of Europe but introduced elsewhere as well. It is a plant which is sometimes cultivated for its ornamental flower, edible root, and herbal properties and is one of the most widely known species of the salsify genus, Tragopogon. In Greece, the root and the fresh leaves are consumed in several traditional recipes, and also the flowers are sometimes collected as wildflowers. That blossomed plant belonging in a subspecies called "T. p. australis" (-southern) was spotted near Volos city, Greece.
