Field Notes

Description:

Another Exidia species found in our oak forest, first in the series. This one takes the shape of a gelatinous, dark-brown to black, crust on dead branches, facing downwards. The crust sticks tightly to a branch, and appears composed of divers gelatinous round 'blobs', that join together forming the crust. This crust was about 15cm in length, half-covering the branch of some 4-5 cm in diameter.

Habitat:

One of three Exidia species found on deadwood scattered on forest floor, in a lowland broadleaved (mainly oak and birch) forest, in Geneva lake valley.

Notes:

I'm getting a bit confused about the identification of these, which is why I run them as Exidia sp. for now. However, according to many descriptions I saw recently, I thought this could be Exidia nigricens, a.k.a. E. plana.
