Field Notes

Description:

This little reddish brown scarab can be extremely numerous. It is about 1 cm long. While the elytra are tinted brown, if you look closely they are actually transparent and you can see the neatly folded wings underneath. We had our first hard rain of the year yesterday, and tonight there were dozens of these beetles at the lights. The picture of the beetles mating was taken 28 April 2013 in the same place. Notice the difference in antennae between the male (top) and female (bottom). The last 2 pictures were taken March 31, 2013.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden and come to white light as well. San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Thank you Argy! I think you are right about the genus. And now that I am seeing photos of other Cyclocephala species, I think we have several here!
