Field Notes

Description:

The millipede was about 5.5 cm long, and 0.5 cm wide. It was pure black, except at the legs. The legs were a very dark brown color, almost black. Its back was covered by a shiny, smooth, and bumpy shell. It had many, tiny and stumpy legs, I estimate about 150 legs.

Habitat:

I found this arthropod in the Singapore American School rainforest. It was under a pile of leaves and dead matter from plants, acting as an FBI agent and trying to stay hidden.

Notes:

Although millipedes are related to the prefix milli-(meaning 1000), they don't actually have 1000 legs. They have between 36 and 400 legs.
