Field Notes

Description:

My students found this big guy back in December 2015. It's now March 2016 and it still has not come out of the cocoon.

Notes:

I've kept it inside of my classroom the entire time, perhaps I should have been keeping it outside?

Species ID Suggestions

Polyphemus Moth

Antheraea polyphemus

Oh my, how awesome!! I'm glad to hear there is still hope. My students have been worrying that it died.
It takes silk moths caterpillars a long time to become moths. It should come out in the next couple months. If it is a female, you may be able to put her outside in a cage to attract a male to mate with and get eggs and be able to see the entire life cycle. Check out the link I used for reference for more information. Best of luck!
