Field Notes

Description:

Large white bird with a long neck. Orange bill, black face, mature adults have a black knob at the base of the bill.

Habitat:

Connetquot State Park, NY, mostly on or near the freshwater ponds and lakes in the park.

Notes:

Introduced and invasive locally, this bird is found in large numbers all over Long Island. The species was kept by breeders on private estates and were released into the wild. They have since established themselves very well and are expanding their range.
