Field Notes

Description:

My family has been observing a large bobcat hanging around our Healdsburg home on several occasions over the past few months. I found it's tracks in my front yard on the Russian River sand after a rain last week. The size of the prints were about as large as my palm - about 4 inches long or so. I've seen bobcats a couple of times in our neighborhood, and also in the Marin Headlands. I love these cats!

Habitat:

Wild oak and bay laurel forests near the Russian River in Sonoma County.

Notes:

There are a few large cougars in our neighborhood too. I've seen deer carcasses in the back woods. They killed one of my sheep - I came across the carcass on a hike about 15 minutes after the kill - and they got my neighbor's dog. It came right into their backyard at night and got the dog, which was tied to a rope and didn't stand a chance of escaping the cat. As sad as it is to lose our animals to predators, I am happy that our ecosystem is healthy enough to host large cats. The reality of life is that things feed on other things, and someday, it may be my turn to feed another. That's Life.
