Field Notes

Description:

Adult: forewing color varies widely: light to dark brown, sometimes reddish-brown with purplish gloss in fresh specimens; some have heavy black shading inside irregular subterminal line, with conspicuously paler area outside ST line; veins and lines usually paler brown, obscure; sharp bluish-black spot in lower half of reniform spot; faint thin median line connects one reniform spot with the other when moth is at rest with wings closed; hindwing brown, grayish-brown toward outer margin

Habitat:

Connecticut to Florida, west to Missouri and Texas. Observed at a porch light near deciduous woods in the midlands of South Carolina (Edgefield County).

Notes:

Adults fly from October to May. Larvae feed on leaves of basswood, cherry, oak. Adults fly from October to May. Per BAMONA, this is a new record for this species in Edgefield County, SC.
