Field Notes

Description:

Very large ant, this one close to 30mm long. Shiny black head and elongated thorax and dark amber abdomen.

Habitat:

Found on the forest floor in the Central Catchment Reserve, Singapore. These ants build underground nests but generally forage at night in the forest canopy.

Notes:

An interesting note for this species is its habit of ritual fighting with individuals from rival colonies. These combats can go on for several days and longer. Ref: The DNA of Singapore.
