Description:

huge moth, 6"+, bald patch on top of its head

Habitat:

pacific coast rainforest

Notes:

This was my first spot in San Cipriano Forest Reserve. San Cipriano is a village beside the reserve. I just got a room and was settling in when I walked past some sheets hanging to dry on the second. This moth was just resting on one. I couldn't believe it! I quickly got my camera and took these shots. I tried to get really close and it flew away. It's not often I see a moth this large.

Saturniidae, Arsenurinae, Rhescynthis sp. and most probably Rhescynthis hippodamia. You have to exptrapolite a little bit and with some fantasy you will see the matching features ;-)... Poor guy looks pretty worn...
