Description:

"Currently 54 species of scorpionflies are recognized in North America, all restricted to the east, from southeastern Canada south to Florida and Texas, all classified in the genus Panorpa (which occurs in the Old World as well). Panorpa nuptialis is one of the largest species and one of the most striking, reddish with strong black and amber banding on the wings. It ranges widely but is most common in the south-central U.S." (information from "Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America")

Habitat:

Wooded hiking trail

Notes:

I found a male and a female on the same hike but in different locations.
