Field Notes

Description:

The indigenous maile is known by many other common names including pukiawe and 'a'ali'i mahu. Its leaves are leathery and produce white flowers.

Habitat:

This native plant grows on the rim of the Kīlauea crater (approx. 4000 ft. altitude), where the soil is acidic and the air is filled with sulfur gas. Maile can grow at very high elevations of around 10,000 feet.

Notes:

This is my 300th spotting. :) It was spotted in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Thank you for the suggestion, sonicjup, but Leptecophylla tameiameiae is a synonym for Styphelia tameiameiae, and Pukiawe is another common name I've referenced in my description. :)
