Field Notes

Description:

During breeding season the males are slightly more colorful than females. Feathers develop more contrast, eyes become more bright and reddish, legs become pink. The breeding display is somewhat like that of a peacock (picture 2 and 4) but shorter.

Habitat:

Coastal estuaries, brackish water, beaches, some ponds and everglades but mostly near the coast.

Notes:

Over the past several reads I have notices an exponential decrease in the number of nests and how nests in the back of the marina have gone from 8 to 0 in the past 6 years. They now nest near the front of the marina and the number on nests there have gone from 4 to 2. Normally nesting doesn't start till late April early may but this year it started late February. Chances of their chicks surviving aren't as high as they used to be, theres a growing number of raccoons and rats and siblicide rates among these herons are high.
