St Patrick tried to subdue the pagans. I didn't know the UK had snakes either
St Patrick's Day fun fact! St Patrick has been credited with banishing snakes from Ireland. No wild snakes have been recorded there even though just 12 miles separates the country from the mainland of Scotland where there are several species, including the venomous European adder. However, scientists examining the fossil record have determined that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes, so it seems there was nothing for St. Patrick to banish! https://upload.facebook.com/projectnoah/photos/a.10150595289465603.674700.10150120463815603/10153931935075603/?type=1&stream_ref=10
