Field Notes

Description:

Hermit crabs, and possibly some baby Coconut crabs.

Habitat:

Living under my hen house near the ocean, near a forest.

Notes:

These crabs feed on the chicken food in my hen house. I have counted over 100 at times. Our property is next to the beach and the crabs come onto the land. They use the shells of the Giant African Snail, which I think is a good thing. I have never seen any without a shell so I do not know if these grow into Coconut crabs. Certainly some look like the Wikipedia photo of small Coconut crabs. They love my chicken pellets from Riverina in Australia.
