Field Notes

Description:

There are 11 North American species.

A name from Greek mythology - Ophion was the first of the Titan gods to rule the world.

Adult Ophion species will hunt for their host caterpillar. Usually one egg is laid per host. Caterpillar usually dies during pupal stage though wasp larva remains to pupate itself. (information from BugGuide)

Habitat:

Suburban backyard

Notes:

This wasp flew into the house when my daughter let the dogs back inside, and she alerted me to its presence. I instinctively cupped the insect, not realizing it was a wasp. She stung me immediately in the center of the palm! It was certainly a learning experience for me because I didn't realize these ichneumons could sting. :-)
