Field Notes

Description:

Dark Chanting Goshawk is a diurnal raptor of family Accipitridae. The specimen photographed here appears like a subadult, just moulting to adult feathers (note very fine grey barred adult plumage starting to show close to wings). In juvenile and immature birds, the covers and the back are brown, and the bird is streaked and barred in front. This Hawk has a red long legs (orange in juvenile).
In adult birds, the brown back is replaced by grey plumage, light grey throat and finely grey-white barred abdomen.

Habitat:

This Hawk lives in savanna and open woodland. It is more discreet than other Chanting Goshawks. Common locally, not endangered.
