Description:
Slow-moving, filter-feeding shark and the same time largest known fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 mand a weight of about 21.5 ton.
Habitat:
The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans. They feed almost exclusively on plankton and small fishes, and pose no threat to humans.
Notes:
The species is considered endangered by the IUCN due to the impacts of fisheries, bycatch losses, and vessel strikes, combined with its long lifespan and late maturation.
